!!!Why The Insurance man was famous for not providing value!!!

I am  three months from reaching 1/2 a hundred in age.  I will be 50 years old March 14 2019. When i look back to my youngest memories of the Insurance man, i remember he gave no real value.  This might sound strange coming from a Insurance professional but bare with me as i explain myself.

I was raised by my grandparents and my memories are full of joy and love.   My grandfather was M C Chapman ( I called him PawPaw). He was a concrete finisher.  Pawpaw was still working this hot, physical taxing, and dangerous job well pass the retiring age of 65. We might have been poor, but Pawpaw never took a handout.

My Grandmother was Sallie Chapman ( I called her mama).  She took care of  the home.   Now that I look back on how  she ran her home, I am truely amazed at how she did it with so little.  There is one thing i remeber she always paid every month. That was the insurance man.

Some time between the 1st and 7th, of every month, the agent would come by our home,.  The agent would collect $50 to $70 dollars and mark  her receipt book. Most of the agents at that time worked for a funeral home not an Insurance Company. They would provide coverage for  the cost of a burial.  When you first look at this it seems to provide a needed service to a family, but after further research that was not the case.

Mama woud try to cover the cost of a funeral for all her children and grandchildren.  The funeral  home agents would provide a coverage called a family plan.  The family plan was supposed to cover everyone she listed.  The problem would come when someone died on that list.  Every time someone died, there was never enough money to cover a complete burial. The family would always have to come up with more money to bury their love one. Mama had been paying over $60 dollars every month for my entire 18 years of life when my Grandfather died.  She still had to pay extra to bury him. She had paid over $13,000 dollars by my estimates and the funeral home and agent still needed more money for a $2000 to $3000 funeral. This is why the Insurance man was famous for not providing value.

I first became a Insurance professional by working for a home service company.  They provided insurance to families and allowed  payments in cash. This is the type of insurance that most  bought to pay for a funeral. .  While the payments were calculated to fit the family budget there is a big problem.  The problem is that the agents will sell for the cost of a funeral today, and not for one 20 or 30 years in the future. This leads to the customer  out living their policy and paying more than the policy will pay out.
